Shubman Gill Reveals Batting Strategy for IPL 2025: Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has made it loud and clear that his team’s top order will be looking for aggressive starts in the IPL 2025 in order to overcome the issues they had last season, where they finished eighth in the points table in Gill’s maiden season as a captain.
Shubman Gill Reveals Batting Strategy for IPL 2025
In IPL 2024, Gujarat Titans had a powerplay run rate of only 7.72, the lowest among all 10 teams, and that is despite playing half of their games at the batting-friendly Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
While Gill and Sai Sudharsan both racked up over 400 runs last season, their powerplay strike rates were among the lowest, something Gill addressed in his presser on Wednesday.
Gill said, “The plan is to score as many runs as possible and lose as little wickets as possible. We did not do well in the powerplay or [the phases] after that last season. We couldn’t play the way we wanted to in the powerplay and even after that, and that shows in the fact that we couldn’t qualify [for the playoffs].
“As a batsman, it is my responsibility to bat in a way that allows us to maximise the powerplay. That is what I strive for, and hopefully, this time we rectify the errors from last season.”
Captaincy Experience Was Immensely Pleasurable for Me: Shubman Gill
Gill was given GT’s captaincy after Hardik Pandya, who took the franchise to two consecutive IPL finals in 2022 and 2023, returned to Mumbai Indians in a groundbreaking trade.
While GT failed to qualify for the playoffs, Gill says he gained “immensely pleasurable” experience as a captain. Last year, he was also elevated to India’s vice-captaincy position in white-ball cricket in spite of the presence of Pandya in the side.
Gill talked of his maiden stint as a skipper in the IPL, saying,
“I’ve had more experience captaining Gujarat [Titans] than the Indian cricket team for sure. And the experience that I get here from Ashu [Ashish Nehra, head coach] paaji or Vikram [Solanki, director of cricket] paaji is immensely pleasurable for me. It was my first year as captain, so there were a lot of things I could learn from. The challenging thing is you learn new things about a player or even about yourself. There were things I needed to work on if I want to be a good captain.”
GT will kick off their campaign on March 25 in Ahmedabad, where they will host Punjab Kings.
