Today is Day Two of the third of three India vs New Zealand Test matches. This contest is being played in Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium and saw the Kiwis win the toss and decide to bat first.
On Day One, New Zealand lost their in-form opener, Devon Conway, early, but then saw captain Tom Latham build a decent partnership with Will Young. After the skipper was bowled by Washington Sundar, in walked Rachin Ravindra, who was bowled by Ravindra as well. At 72/3, the BlackCaps were reeling but were saved by Young and Daryl Mitchell’s 87-run partnership.
But then, the star of the inning Ravindra Jadeja came to the party. After Young was dismissed by Jadeja and the team score was 159/4, the New Zealand inning started collapsing at the hands of Jaddu.
The Chennai Super Kings all-rounder ended up with a five-wicket haul as the Kiw3is were dismissed for 235, facing a collapse towards the end. Daryl Mitchell was the top scorer for his team with 82 runs.
With New Zealand having been bowled out in 66 overs, India got to bat on Day One as well. With a plan to play quick, the Men in BLue got off the blocks quick. Captain Rohit Sharma scored a run a ball 18 before losing his wicket. At this point, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill took charge.
By the time Jaiswal got out for 30, the team score was 78/2 with about an over remaining in the day’s play. Seeing that, Mohammed Siraj was sent out as the night watchman but was dismissed on the first ball itself. Then walked in Virat Kohli. But before the day’s play ended, he ran himself out. At the end of Day One, India’s score was 86/4.
On Day Two, out walked Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant. While Gill played with caution and poise, rotating the strike regularly, Pant came out with all guns blazing. While both men were dropped around the score of 50, they kept chugging along. By the time Rishabh was dismissed for 60 off 59 balls, the Indian Cricket Team had reached 81 runs.
From here, India did suffer a mini-collapse as Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed for 14 and Sarfaraz Khan was out for a duck, but Shubman Gill stood at one end and marched towards a ton.

But it was not to be, as at the personal score of 90 and with India trailing by eight runs, Shubman Gill edged an Ajaz Patel delivery, which was caught by Daryl Mitchell in the slips. And thus his inning came to an end.
The crowd at Wankhede Stadium gave a standing ovation to Shubman Gill, Indian cricket’s future (and current) superstar.
As of writing this, India has been bowled out for 263 runs, taking a 28-run lead in the first inning. Gill, with his 90 runs, is the highest run scorer of the match so far. Rishabh Pant is the only other player to cross the 50-run mark, while Washington Sundar impressed with his 38-ball 36.
