Shreyas Iyer Talks About the Back Injury
Shreyas Iyer talks about the back injury: Iyer’s injury emerged after the fourth Border-Gavaskar Test against Australia in March. Realizing the significance of maintaining his athletic future, Iyer underwent surgery in London in April.

The ordeal proved challenging, as Iyer navigated the difficult path of rehab and recovery. The pain was intense, with the nerve compression causing discomfort that even extended to his toe. However, with the support of medical experts, physiotherapists, his family, and friends, Iyer persevered through the rehab process. He noted that patience was key during this trying period.
“I had this issue for a while, but I was taking injections and going through various routes to see to it that I am steady and playing many more matches. But it reached a saturation point where I realized that ‘okay, now I have to get surgery. And the physios and the experts, the back experts, told me that it’s important you go under the knife and get this done with.”
After his London surgery, Iyer continued his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for three months. His efforts culminated in a series of practice matches, earning him the approval of Nitin Patel, the head of NCA’s medical staff. The successful progress was a testament to the hard work invested during this roller-coaster journey.

Astonished Over Yo-Yo Test Results
Shreyas Iyer talks about the back injury: Iyer expressed his astonishment at his performance in the yo-yo test, an intensive sprinting assessment, given his initial doubts during the testing phase. He attributed his success to the gradual subsiding of pain and the improved strength in his legs. The process also included running sessions and matches, during which he gradually regained momentum.
“The testing phase was the toughest period to go through. The physios and trainers were pretty confident of me coming back strong. But in my mind, I could feel the pain. I was pretty oblivious at that point in time, [to] whether I would pass the test or not. But over a period of time, I realized the pain was subsiding and strength was improving in my legs.
“Gradually, we started doing some running sessions. The first running session was extremely tough and I was a bit perplexed at that point in time as to what would happen. In the second session, I was progressing. I did some trial yo-yo tests, and after some time, I played a match and then I was gaining that momentum. In the yo-yo test, I surprised myself as well.”
Iyer is now focusing on playing ODIs and clinching a spot in the World Cup squad, which will be his maiden one. As the competition for India’s No. 4 position tightens up, it would motivate youngsters to do their best to remain in the squad.
