Shreyas Iyer is one of the most underrated Indian cricketers from the past few years. While he is a regular in the Indian Cricket Team, Iyer usually does not get the recognition or fanfare that a player of his calibre deserves. A player of Iyer’s ability and performance history walks into any international team in the world, but for India, he is not always a lock.
Despite that, Shreyas Iyer is one of the most promising batters in world cricket and the captain of his domestic and IPL teams. So today, we will look at his stats across formats and will summarise his career.

Shreyas Iyer Career Overview
Born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, on December 6, 1994 (which makes him 30 years old), Shreyas Iyer, like most Mumbai boys, had his tryst with cricket fairly early in his life. He first made waves during the under-19 World Cup in 2014, in which he scored two half-centuries in three matches. Ahead of IPL 2015, Iyer was bought by the Delhi Daredevils (now the Capitals) for Rs. 2.6 crore at the age of 19.
The young man impressed in his first year in the league, playing all 14 matches for the Daredevils and making 439 runs at an average of over 33, even scoring four half-centuries that season. That same year, in the Ranji Trophy, Shreyas became the highest run scorer in the competition, making 1321 runs at an average of over 73.
Fantastic results in domestic cricket resulted in his promotion to the Indian Cricket Team. Iyer made his national team debut on November 1, 2017, in a T20I against New Zealand at Delhi. A month later, he made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka at Dharamshala.
At this time, Iyer was growing in stature in Indian cricket. Midway through IPL 2018, he was named the captain of his franchise. Over the next three seasons, he did what no other DC captain had done and took the team to three straight playoffs.
In February 2020, he made his first international century in an ODI against New Zealand. He became a limited-overs regular for the national team and one of the best players in the IPL. In November 2021, Iyer made his Test debut against New Zealand in Kanpur.
In 2022, Shreyas moved to the Kolkata Knight Riders, doing fine with the team in his first season. After missing the 2023 season entirely, Iyer led KKR to their third IPL title in 2024.
In 2023, he was a part of the Indian team for the ODI World Cup and scored a match-winning 100 in the semi-final. In 2024, he fell out of the national team before making a triumphant return in 2025. This year, he was India’s highest run scorer in the Champions Trophy.
In 2025, Iyer also became the second-highest-paid player in the IPL when he was bought by the Punjab Kings for a whopping Rs. 26.75 crore. He has now captained his third team to an IPL playoff.
