Shreyas Iyer Blames Poor Batting After RCB Loss: The topsy-turvy season for both Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) continued as after defeating RCB at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Friday, PBKS lost against the same opposition on Sunday at their own home ground in Mullanpur.
Neither team has been able to string more than two wins so far in the season. But they have been among the most formidable units, as both have five wins under their belt each in eight outings.
For RCB, this was their fifth win away from home in five games this season, while they have suffered three defeats at home. After their match in Mullanpur, RCB are placed third in the points table, and Punjab are fourth.
Rajat Patidar won the toss and elected to bowl first. The RCB bowlers did an excellent job in restricting PBKS to only 157. RCB gunned down the target in 18.5 overs, with Virat Kohli remaining unbeaten on 73 and Devdutt Padikkal crashing 61 off 35.
We’ve struggled to assess the wicket when we bat first: Shreyas Iyer After RCB vs PBKS
As many as five PBKS batsmen went past 20, but none of them could score more than 35. This is what PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer lamented after the loss. Iyer reckoned his batsmen have failed to understand the pitch and assess the par score effectively while batting first this season.
“If you see the majority of our batters like to go from ball one, we’ve struggled to assess the wicket when we bat first. Otherwise, we’ve not been able to capitalise on the starts we’ve been getting. We weren’t able to set a total we could defend,” Shreyas Iyer said in his post-match interview.
Iyer also talked about the difficult task of asking his openers, Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh, to check their aggressive shots. While both batsmen have helped PBKS win games through their attacking strokeplay, they have also been guilty of getting out to reckless shots.
Iyer opined, “Both of them (openers) are great strokemakers; it’s hard for them to comprehend if you tell them to slow down. Need to take the bull by the horns and see to it that we get a good total on the board for the bowlers.”
PBKS’s next match is on April 26 against KKR at the Eden Gardens.
