Should Jasprit Bumrah be rested from the 3rd Test: Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was stern in his comment regarding the workload management of fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, saying that the Indian spearhead seamer should play all five Tests of the ongoing BGT 2024-25 unless he’s injured.
Bumrah’s workload has cautiously been managed since his return from a back injury in 2023. He’s been unarguably the best fast bowler in the world across formats since his comeback last year. In this period, Bumrah has often been rested from white-ball bilateral series and even was rested from a couple of home Test matches earlier this year.
He has now played both Tests in Australia so far. In this, he has bowled the most overs among the three Indian pacers. Bumrah is currently the leading wicket-taker in the BGT 2024-25 with 12 scalps at a staggering average of only 11.25.
India received a huge scare during the 2nd Test in Adelaide when Bumrah went down on the ground while clutching his abductor muscle. Thankfully, he was up and bowled after being tended to by the physio.
Should Jasprit Bumrah be rested from the 3rd Test against Australia?
Gavaskar feels Bumrah must play all five Tests against Australia.
“I would like him to play all 5 Test matches. You are playing for India; there is no question of all this workload and stuff like that. He has to play all 5 Test matches unless he is injured,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.
The 75-year-old commentator pointed out that the Adelaide Test, which India lost by 10 wickets, ended in the first session of day 3. Thus, the Indian seamer will get additional rest for the third Test, which is slated to start on December 14 in Brisbane. Gavaskar hailed Bumrah as India’s main man to drive their bowling attack.
“This match has finished in two-and-a-half days, and it hasn’t gone on for 5 days. So the man gets five days of break. If the man has a problem, if he has an injury, then yes, but if he doesn’t have an injury, yes, you have been giving him 4-5 over spells; that is perfect, and that is the way to go. I think he is your battering ram. If you are not going to play him for all five Tests, then you reduce your chances of taking all 20 wickets,” the former opener added.
After the Adelaide Test, captain Rohit Sharma was asked the same question. The Indian skipper confirmed that Bumrah will not be rested for the Brisbane Test, and he would want his main weapon to play in all five Test matches.
