Shane Watson Will Not Coach Pakistan: Legendary Australian Shane Watson has refused to become the coach of the Pakistan men’s cricket team and chooses to focus on his current broadcasting duties.
Reports emerged a few days back that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) were looking at Watson as the prime candidate for being the national team’s coach. In fact, he was in talks with the board but ultimately turned the offer down.
Wotto coached the Pakistan Super League side Quetta Gladiators in the 2024 season, He took the team to the playoffs, where they lost in the Eliminator. It was his coaching stint in the PSL that brought him on PCB’s radar. They were also offering to pay him $2 million/ year

ESPNcricinfo reported that Watson has refused to take up the job of coaching Pakistan because he is more interested in fulfilling his current contractual assignments. This includes his stint as a commentator in the upcoming Indian Premier League.

The 42-year-old is also the coach of San Fransico Unicorns in USA’s Major League Cricket. If he took the coaching job in Pakistan, he would have to give up on all those duties and immediately join up with the national team before the upcoming white-ball series against New Zealand in April.
Shane also has a young family, with his children being 10 and 8 years old. A full-time commitment for what is one of the toughest and most tumultuous jobs in world cricket might not be what the Aussie is looking for.
Mohammad Hafeez was the national team’s permanent head coach until recently. But after disappointing tours to Australia and New Zealand, he was removed from the position.
Shane Watson’s decision to pull out of the race for being Pakistan’s head coach has put the national team in jeopardy. The team is set to host New Zealand in April before playing against England in May. This will be followed by the 2024 T20 World Cup in June-July.
