Shan Masood Reflects On Pakistan Loss To England: Pakistan Cricket Team captain Shan Masood has addressed the media following his team’s humiliating loss by an inning and 47 runs to England in the first Test match that recently concluded, saying that the loss hurt his team as well as the fans all over the country.
The first Pakistan vs England Test match of the three-match series took place on an extremely flat track at the Multan Cricket Stadium. The home side won the toss and decided to bat first.
While the likes of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan failed in the first inning, the Men in Green notched up a score of 556 on the backs of centuries by Abdullah Shafique, Salman Ali Agha, and captain Shan Masood.
However, in response to that inning, England played one of the greatest innings in Test history, breaking several records. While captain Ollie Pope was dismissed for a duck, Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley played decent innings. But the stars of the shop were Joe Root and Harry Brook.
Root scored a whopping 262 runs, which is his second-highest Test score and his sixth double-century, the most for an Englishman. During his inning, he even surpassed Alastair Cook to become the highest run-scorer in Test cricket for England.
But Brook did one better, scoring a triple-century, which was the second-fastest one in the history of Tests after Virender Sehwag. Joe and Harry together built a 454-run partnership, which is the largest partnership for the fourth wicket in Test history. In the second session of Day Four, England finished their first inning at 823/7d, which is the fourth-highest Test score in history and the largest this century.
It seemed at this point that a result to this match was highly unlikely. But with one session on Day Four, Pakistan lost six wickets on this flat track, ending the day at 82/6. And while the lower order put up some fight, the Pakistan Cricket Team was all out for 220, losing the game by an inning and 47 runs.
Shan Masood Reflects On Pakistan Loss To England
Following the match, Pakistan’s skipper Masood had this to say to the media:
“We’re hurt by the results, hurt as a nation. I never try and shy away from responsibility. What hurts is that we’re not getting the results that Pakistan cricket deserves. We are trying to turn it around.”
The captain then went on to blame the bowlers for the loss and allowing England to score one of the biggest scores in Test cricket history, saying,
“When you put up 550 on the board, it’s important to back it up with 10 wickets. 220 runs in the third innings, depending on what kind of lead you have, can also be a good score. England found a way to get those 20 wickets. We also have to find a way to do that. That’s the challenge a side has to go forward.”
This result only added to what has probably been the worst year for Pakistan Cricket in recent memory. First, the team was whitewashed in a Test series against Australia; they were then eliminated from the group stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup following a loss to the United States of America. More recently, they were whitewashed by Bangladesh 2-0 in a Test series at home, losing a Test and a series to the Bangla Tigers at home for the first time.
