In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, there is even more added responsibility on the shoulders of Shami, who himself is making a comeback to international cricket after being out for more than a year due to an ankle injury that was followed by some knee issues.
Shami featured in the T20Is and ODIs against England. He displayed good form and rhythm against Bangladesh, which was a good sign for India ahead of their clashes against Pakistan and New Zealand.
Mohammed Shami struck with the wicket of Bangladesh opener Soumya Sarkar in the first over of the match. In the same spell with the new ball, he got rid of Mehidy Hasan Miraz as well.
Bangladesh were left reeling at 35/5 in the ninth over as Harshit Rana and Axar Patel also got into the wickets column. However, India couldn’t blow them away as Jaker Ali and Towhid Hridoy formed a resolute stand of 154 runs off 206 balls.
Just when the duo decided to take the attack to the Indians, Shami returned and broke the partnership by dismissing Jaker Ali. Ali attempted a slog but mistimed his shot, and Virat Kohli took a good catch in the deep.
Shami is the eighth Indian bowler to take 200 wickets in ODI cricket but he is the fastest one to do so, achieving this landmark in his 104 ODIs.
In fact, Shami is the second-fastest bowler in the history of ODI cricket to 200 wickets, behind only Mitchell Starc, who took 102 ODIs to the same milestone. Further, Shami is the quickest in terms of balls taken.
