Sergio Aguero On Lionel Messi World Cup Future: Former Argentina and Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has speculated upon his fellow Argentine Lionel Messi’s playing status for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, suggesting that despite the legendary footballer not being the player he once was, he will play in the tournament.
Messi is considered by many to not only be the greatest footballer of his generation but also the greatest star the sport has ever seen. He is the greatest player in the history of his long-time club FC Barcelona and is definitely in the conversation to be his nation’s greatest-ever player alongside Diego Maradona.
In fact, the comparisons with Maradona ran ever since Lionel became one of the greatest players on the planet around 2007-08. But his detractors always had one thing over him: a World Cup title. While he was in the squad for the 2006 tournament, Messi led Argentina for the first time in the 2010 World Cup, where the team exited in the quarterfinal.
By 2014, the then-Barca star had already become one of the greatest of all time. That year, he did take his team to the final of the World Cup only to lose it in extra time. In 2018, the Albiceleste were eliminated in the Round of 16.
But when they did win the 2021 Copa America, Messi’s first major international trophy, Argentina became one of the favourites to win the 2022 World Cup. And despite losing to Saudi Arabia in their opening game, Messi and his boys went on to defeat France in one of the greatest sporting finals of all time to win the cup for the first time Diego Maradona did in 1986.
Sergio Aguero On Lionel Messi World Cup Future
Sergio Aguero, who was the star striker for Argentina throughout the 2010s, made 86 appearances for the national team. At the time, he was one of the best attacking players in the world with Manchester City. Being Lionel Messi’s close friend, ‘Kun’ speculated on his status for the upcoming 2026 World Cup. In a recent interview with ESPN, Aguero said,
“I think Messi will make it to 2026, he will take care of himself. Obviously he won’t be the Leo he always was, but give him a few free kicks or a few assists and he will make them. He can get there physically. If he wants to, he will, because he takes good care of himself.”
Messi now plays for Major League Soccer (MLS) side Inter Miami. He also won the 2024 Copa America. With several of his national teammates in fine form, Argentina will enter the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be played in the US, Mexico, and Canada; as one of the favourites, even if they have their GOAT with them.
