Virender Sehwag Calls India Head Coach An Easy Job: Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag reckons that being the head coach of the Indian Cricket Team is not a challenging job on account of how good the players are and the quality of the support staff around the coach.
Sehwag’s former national team opening partner, Gautam Gambhir, has recently taken over as the head coach of the Indian Cricket Team. This came after mentoring the Kolkata Knight Riders to a dominant IPL title in 2024.
Gambhir, who only took the KKR assignment this season, was the mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants since 2022, taking the team to the playoffs in both the seasons he was with them. His return to the Knight Riders was celebrated a decade ago; he has captained the franchise to two IPL titles. Suffice it to say that Gautam stood on expectations.
The former Indian opener took over the national team job from Rahul Dravid, whose successful stint as the head coach ended with India winning the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies.
Gambhir’s stint as the Indian head coach started with a 3-0 win over Sri Lanka in a three-match T20 series. But this was followed by losing the ODI series on the same tour 2-0. This was India’s first bilateral series loss in the island nation since 1007.
Being the Indian head coach is seen as the most high-profile job in cricket coaching. And with it being so high profile, it comes with its challenges. The biggest challenge of the job is to keep winning and keep up with the expectations of over a billion fans. Another challenge is to keep the big names and bigger personalities in the squad in check.

But if Virender Sehwag is to be asked, being the head coach of the Indian Cricket Team is not much of a challenge. India’s first triple centurion in Test cricket believes that the quality of players in the team, combined with the quality of professionals in the coaching support staff, makes it not too difficult. In a recent interview with Amar Ujala, the NAwab of Najafgarh said,
“I don’t think it’s a challenging role because there are other professionals involved too. The team recently won the T20 World Cup; players know their roles. With Gambhir coming in, players will have clarity. So that will be an added advantage. The challenges will be less for Gambhir and more for players, since now they will feel that after the T20 World Cup, they have to win the Champions Trophy, or the WTC final, or the World Cup. But of course, Gambhir is around to help them all.”
In the coming months, Gautam Gambhir will coach his first Test matches against Bangladesh, after which will come the all-important Border-Gavaskar Trophy. In 2025, Gambhir will lead India into the Champions Trophy and possibly the World Test Championship final.
