SCG Gives Virat Kohli A Standing Ovation: With Virat Kohli having played what is most likely his last inning in Test cricket in Australia, the crowd today at the Sydney Cricket Ground cheered for the Indian great after his dismissal in the last match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Today was Day Two of the fifth and final Australia vs India Test played at the SCG. On Day One, the Indian Cricket Team batted first and was bowled out for 185, with Rishabh Pant being the team’s top scorer with 40 runs.
Day Two started with the Australian Cricket Team at 9/1, which within 10 overs of play today, turned into 39/4. Steve Smith and debutant Beau Webster stabilised the Aussie innings, with the latter even scoring a 50, but Australia could only manage to put up 181 runs and trailed by four runs in the first inning.
The third inning of the match began with a lot of cricket left on Day Two. The second Indian inning started well, but the Indian openers got out simultaneously after putting up 42 runs together on the board. After Yashasvi Jaiswal’s wicket in the 10th over, in walked Virat Kohli.

At the age of 36, it is highly likely that it is Virat’s last tour to Australia. Kohli has been more than a player for India on Australian soil; he has been a symbol of the Indian Cricket Team finally overtaking the Kangaroos as the best cricket team in the world.
In the 13 Tests he played Down Under before the ongoing series, Virat Kohli scored 1352 runs in 25 innings at an average of 54.08. This included six 100s and four 50s.
However, the 2024-25 BGT has not been one to remember for Virat. While he did score a solid 100 in the first Test match at Perth, his form since has been shoddy at best and downright poor at worst. Apart from the century, he had scored only 84 runs in the seven innings before today, with his highest being 36 in Melbourne.
So, many fans, even some Australians, wanted him to score some good and big runs today. But, after scoring six runs in 11 deliveries, Kohli got out in a way he has been dismissed all the other times in this series, edging a ball outside off and getting caught in the slips or by the keeper.

After having a contentious relationship with the Australian crowds throughout this series, no one knew how the people in the stands would react. But the crowd at the SCG recognised that they were seeing a great of the game playing for the final time on their soil and gave Virat a standing ovation.
As for India, they finished the day’s play at 141/6 and have a 145-run lead in the fifth India vs Australia Test. Day Three promises to be an exhilarating day of cricket and will be the most important one in this series.
While the Aussies are 2-1 ahead in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, as India won the previous edition of this series, the winner of this match will take the trophy home.
