After convicting the leg-spinner for the crime of raping a 17-year-old woman, the bench of Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal under the Kathmandu District Court handed a sentence of 8 years in prison, Rs. 3 lakh fine, and a Rs. 2 lakh compensation to the victim.
In September of last, year, the Kathmandu District Court issued an arrest warning for Lamichhane, the then-captain of the Nepal men’s cricket team. The 23-year-old was in Jamaica at the time, playing for the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League.
The franchise did release Lamichhane following the arrest order, upon which he returned to Nepal and was then arrested.

Before his arrest, the cricket pleaded his innocence on Facebook, claiming he would “fully cooperate in all stages of the investigation and will fight a legal battle to prove my innocence.” He also called this whole scenario, “conspiracy and wrongful allegation.”
Following the district court’s announcement, Lamichhane’s lawyer Saroj Ghimire told AFP that they will be seeking to appeal the decision in a higher court.
Sandeep represented Nepal in the 2023 ODI World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe in June-July 2023. Some of his last appearances for the national side came in the 2023 Asia Cup in August-September.
In the 51 ODIs he played for Nepal, Sandeep Lamichhane took 112 wickets. He also scalped 98 wickets in 52 T20Is. The wrist-spinner was also the first Nepalese cricketer to play in the IPL, representing Delhi Capitals from 2018 to 2020, taking 13 wickets in 9 appearances.
Despite being the face of cricket in Nepal for a long time, it is difficult to think that Sandeep Lamichhne would ever be able to overcome the stigma of this serious conviction
