During an emotionally charged press conference, Sakshi placed her shoes on the table, symbolizing her departure from the sport.
“Now that Brij Bhushan Singh’s business partner and close aide has been elected as the president of WFI, I quit wrestling.” Sakshi Malik said.
She also expressed gratitude to the people who supported her and lamented the absence of any elected women contestants.
An emotional Sakshi, leaving the press conference in tears, highlighted the absence of a single woman contestant in the election. She emphasized the need for a woman president to prevent harassment in the sport. Vinesh Phogat shared her disappointment, expressing concern about potential harassment and the lack of positive changes despite their collective efforts.
Bajrang Punia echoed these sentiments, expressing hope in the nation’s judiciary to address the issues. He mentioned the testimony of 18-20 girls before the Oversight Committee and the Sports Minister’s assurance that no one linked with Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh would be part of the WFI. Despite waiting for the committee’s decision, the athletes resumed their protest, with Bajrang Punia emphasizing their commitment to truth and justice for women in wrestling.
