Sachin Tendulkar on Vinesh Phogat: Legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has shown his full support to wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who, according to Tendulkar, has been “robbed” of a silver medal at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024, despite reaching the final “fair and square.”.
Indians right now have their eyes keenly fixated on the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), who will soon make a verdict over the appeal Vinesh and her team have raised after her disqualification on the morning of her final match in the women’s 50 kg wrestling event.
On the weigh-in ahead of her gold medal match, Vinesh weighed 100 grams more than the allowed weight. Hence, she was disqualified and couldn’t compete in the final match.
However, what has irked the Indians is that she was positioned last in her competition despite reaching the final fairly after defeating three opponents in the knockout rounds, thus losing the silver medal as well, which seemed secured until then. Vinesh has appealed to the CAS for a joint silver medal.
She Definitely Deserves A Silver Medal: Sachin Tendulkar on Vinesh Phogat
Former India batsman Sachin Tendulkar opined that Phogat “definitely deserves” a silver medal, although the rules of the Olympics have positioned her last after her disqualification.
On Friday, Tendulkar took to Twitter to raise his voice and throw his weight behind Vinesh.
Sachin Tendulkar on Vinesh Phogat:
“Time for an Umpire’s Call! Every sport has rules and those rules need to be seen in context, maybe even revisited at times. Vinesh Phogat qualified fair and square for the finals. Her disqualification by weight, was before the finals, and hence, for her to be robbed of a deserving silver medal defies logic and sporting sense.”
“It would have been understandable if an athlete were to have been disqualified for ethical breaches such as the usage of performance enhancing drugs. In that case, to not be awarded any medal and be placed last would be justifiable. However, Vinesh beat her opponents fairly to reach the top two. She definitely deserves a silver medal.
“While we all wait for a verdict from the Court of Arbitration for Sport, let us hope and pray that Vinesh gets the recognition she deserves,” he further asserted.
