SA20 SEC vs DSG Final Report: Stunning batting displays from four out of the top five batters before a clinical performance from the pace trio of Marco Jansen, Daniel Worrall, and Ottniel Baartman in the final against the Durban Super Giants handed the Sunrisers Eastern Cape a second consecutive SA20 title in as many seasons.
Aiden Markram’s team successfully defended their SA20 champions’ crown at Newlands in Cape Town on Saturday evening with a domineering win over Keshav Maharaj’s side.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape vs Durban Super Giants As it happened: SEC batters run show to pile 204
Markram won the toss and elected to bat first, but SEC lost opener Dawid Malan in the second over of the innings to Reece Topley. However, the other opener, Jordan Hermann, and the number 3, Tom Abell, counter-attacked with their partnership of 90 runs in 52 balls. Hermann scored 42 off 26 and Abell scored 55 off 34. The pair whacked 12 fours and 3 sixes combined.
To break this momentum of the Sunrisers, Durban captain Keshav Maharaj stepped up and dismissed both the set batters in the 11th over. The SEC innings stood in a precarious position at 106/3 when captain Aiden Markram and in-form youngster Tristan Stubbs joined hands.

While Stubbs teed off straightaway with three fours in his first 10 balls, Markram batted steadily. Markram was 17 (16) at the end of the 16th over before he, too, started attacking. The SEC captain walloped Naveen for a four and six before the pair took 20 runs off Junior Dala. Stubbs collected a couple of sixes off Topley as SEC piled up 204. The last four overs brought them 59 runs.
The final was not done yet, not until Durban had Quinton de Kock and the monstrous Heinrich Klaasen. But both couldn’t do any damage to SEC: de Kock was dismissed for 3 by Worrall and Klaasen for a duck by Baartman. Marco Jansen swept away the rest with a five-wicket haul. The three pacers combined to pick 9 wickets as DSG were bowled out for 115.
The saying that ‘Batters win you games, bowlers win you tournament’ has never been more true than in the SA20 2024 season: the top three wicket-takers of the season were all the Sunrisers bowlers, while they didn’t have a single batsman in the top five run-scorers.
SA20 SEC vs DSG Final Report Man of the Match:
Tom Abell was named Player of the Match in the final for his 55 (34), which came after SEC had lost Malan early in their innings.
