Ryan Burl’s Personal Life
Ryan Burl was born in Marondera, about 72 km from Harare. As a teenager, he had the chance to study at a university in Southampton and also pursue county cricket in England. That path could have given him financial security and possibly a chance to aim for international cricket there.
At 19, he chose differently. He left his university degree unfinished and returned home after getting an opportunity to play first-class cricket in Zimbabwe. He said pride and patriotism were the main reasons behind his decision, as he always wanted to represent his country.
His journey was not easy. Before he could make his international debut against India, he tore his ACL a day before the match, missing the chance to play against an MS Dhoni-led side. Zimbabwe cricket also went through financial problems and suspension in 2019, which created uncertainty about the future of players.
During tough financial times, Burl shared photos of his torn shoes on social media to show the struggles Zimbabwe players faced behind the scenes. He explained that many players had to repair their own equipment due to limited resources. He remains proud to represent Zimbabwe under coach Dave Houghton.
