Stanford Freshman Ryan Agarwal wants His play to represent India. Ryan Agarwal’s hometown is located near Dallas, and the arena in Frisco, Texas is only a 30-minute drive away. However, when he was in middle school, stepping inside the arena felt like entering another world.

Back in 2015, Ryan Agarwal was a sixth-grader who had a great passion for basketball. When the Dallas Mavericks drafted Satnam Singh, the first Indian-born player to be selected in an N.B.A. draft, Agarwal knew he had to go see him compete. Two years later, he went on a trip with his cousin and father to watch Singh play in an N.B.A. G League game, and that’s when he realised he wanted to play like Singh himself.
Ryan Agarwal was born in a Dallas suburb to parents who had emigrated from India. He mentioned that he had never seen someone who looked like him playing basketball, which made him never consider taking the game seriously. However, after watching Satnam Singh play, he realised that he could play at a high level and started to believe in himself.
“It was just exciting for him to connect with someone he can see is like himself,” – Ashok Agarwal, Ryan’s father, said.

Ryan Agarwal, a freshman shooting guard at Stanford University, is currently 1,700 miles away from his home. He is determined to strengthen the Cardinal’s offence and follow in the footsteps of Singh, who represented India in American basketball while playing in college. Six years have passed since then, but still Ryan Agarwal wants His play to represent India.
“I just have to keep in mind the fact that I help represent such a big community, and only so few people have the ability to do what I’m trying to do,” – Agarwal said recently on the sideline of a Stanford practice.

Agarwal said he didn’t shy away from a certain amount of pressure that comes with people judging an entire culture based on his play. The high school talent evaluator Rivals.com rated him as a four-star recruit, among the best 150 players in his class. In a video with dramatic music set to a montage of him walking along train tracks, Agarwal voiced his intention “to set an example for a whole heritage and prove that we can do it, too.”
“The commitment video that he did was his thought process, his message that he wanted to say,” – his mother, Ranjini Agarwalla, said. “It was not anything that we even talked about. So we were shocked when he brought that up and said, ‘This is what I want to do.’

Agarwal’s recruitment out of high school was a remarkable achievement. According to N.C.A.A. statistics, only 2 percent of Division I student-athletes were identified as Asian in the 2021-22 school year. Agarwal’s parents revealed that they were unsure how to navigate the competitive world of recruiting and elite sports as he was growing up.
“For us, everything was a learning experience,” – Ashok Agarwal said.
Ranjini Agarwalla stated that families now approach them seeking advice on how to motivate their children in sports and attract the attention of college coaches.
“I’m blessed with the parents I have because they put me in every sport possible to just try to see what I love, which honestly, not a lot of Indian parents do,” – Ryan Agarwal said. “I think that’s the biggest thing for me. If it wasn’t for the support from my parents, who knows where I would be.”
Agarwal has played as a substitute in almost two-thirds of Stanford’s games this season, averaging approximately 8 minutes per game. Although Rivals.com previously ranked Agarwal as a top-20 shooting guard, Stanford Coach Jerod Haase believes that Agarwal is a more well-rounded player due to his height of 6-foot-6 and his exceptional passing skills.
“He’s going to be really good,” – Haase said.
It is yet to be determined how successful Agarwal’s efforts will be, but currently, he is dedicated to assisting Stanford (11-16) in establishing a strong presence in the highly competitive Pac-12 Conference.
Sim Bhullar, a Canadian-born basketball player of Indian descent, is the sole individual to have played in the NBA. Although he was not drafted, he participated in three games for the Sacramento Kings during the 2014-15 season. Currently, Bhullar is playing in Taiwan.
Despite being promoted as a “one in a billion” player in a Netflix documentary, Singh was unable to establish himself in the NBA. He struggled to gain momentum in the G League, where he only played for two seasons with the Texas Legends, and never got the opportunity to play in an NBA game. Currently, Singh is a performer for All Elite Wrestling.
According to a league spokesperson, since the NBA established an academy in India in 2017, 20 students have received scholarships to Division I programs, prep schools, and junior colleges in the United States (USA), or have signed professional contracts.
According to Zach Reynolds, a spokesperson for Stanford, he and other sports information directors across the country were able to identify only three Division I men’s basketball players of Indian descent. These players include Agarwal, center Amaan Sandhu from Monmouth, and Ishaan Jagiasi, a walk-on player for Penn State.
During Stanford’s first home game of the season, 1,500 students from elementary and middle schools in Palo Alto, California, filled the stands at Maples Pavilion. According to Haase, Agarwal felt a sense of pride in being a role model for these children who were just beginning to envision their futures, much like Agarwal did when he watched Singh in Frisco back in 2017.
“There’s probably a lot of those kids who didn’t realise these goals are achievable,” – Haase said. “Even if it’s just coming to a game and seeing someone like Ryan, I think he takes great pride in being that beacon of, ‘Hey, work hard, have fun while you’re doing it, and there’s some great things that can happen.”
