Ruud Van Nistelrooy Leaves Manchester United: Manchester United legend and interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has left the club ahead of the arrival of Ruben Amorim, the club’s new full-time manager.
So far, the 2024-25 season has been horrible for the Old Trafford club. They are currently 13th in the Premier League with four wins, four losses, and three draws in 11 games. Meanwhile, in the UEFA Europa League, they are currently 15th in the table with three draws and just one win in four games.
After one decent and one highly disappointing season under former manager Erik Ten Har, United fired the Dutch manager after the 2-1 loss against West Ham on October 27. The English giants appointed Ten Hag’s assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy as the interim manager while they searched for his replacement.

Nistelrooy, who played five seasons at the club from 2001 to 2005, managed the Red Devils for just four games. His first match in charge was an EFL Cup Round of 16 match-up against Leicester City, which United won 5-2. Then came a 1-1 draw against an in-form Chelsea in the PL. In his third game, the side won their first Europa League game of the season, a 2-0 win over PAOK FC. And now, most recently, they defeated Leicester once again, this time 3-0 in the Premier League.
In all this time, which has been a span of about two weeks, Manchester United scouted and signed Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim as the new full-time coach. The 39-year-old was, until last week, the manager of defending Liga Portugal champions Sporting Lisbon. So far in this season, Sporting has won all 11 of their league matches. While in the UCL, they have won three and drawn one out of their four games to stand second in the table.
In Ruben’s last game with Sporting, they defeated Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League.

But Amorim’s arrival at the club has meant the departure of van Nistelrooy, who joined as Erik Ten Hag’s assistant manager in July 2024. He, along with four members of his support staff, will be exiting the club. It is understood that the former United striker is looking to be the full-time manager of a club, for which he would not get the opportunity to be in Manchester.
In a club statement released by Manchester United, they have paid their respect to the club legend, who took care of the club in the time of need.
Ruud is, and always will be, a Manchester United legend. We are grateful for his contribution and the way in which he has approached his role throughout his time with the club. He will always be very welcome at Old Trafford,” the statement read.
As for Ruben Amorim, he arrived in England on Monday and was greeted by the club’s chief executive, Omar Berrada, sporting director, Dan Ashworth, and technical director, Jason Wilcox. As his paperwork is getting sorted out, he will take charge of the squad ahead of their next game, which will be played in the Premier League against Ipswich Town on Sunday, November 24, after the end of the ongoing international break.
