Ruben Amorim Likely Replacement For Ten Hag: Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim is in talks with English club Manchester United and is now being seen as the favourite to be the club’s next full-time manager.
United sacked their manager Erik Ten Hag after the Dutch manager’s couple of tumultuous years at the helm. The Red Devils have gotten off to their worst start in the Premier League. After nine matches, they have won three, lost four, and are on 11 points, leaving them stranded at 14th on the table.
This comes after a very disappointing 2023-24 season where Man United finished eighth, their worst league finish in the Premier League era, or in about 35 years. They also finished last in their UEFA Champions League group. But winning the FA Cup was enough for Ten Hag to save his job for the time being.
But it has not been only three months into the 2024-25 season, and United have fired their manager. The question now is, What’s next for the English giants?
Club legend Ruud Van Nistelrooy has been brought in as the interim manager while the club looks for a full-time replacement. As Erik Ten Hag’s job has been in trouble for about a year now, fans and experts have speculated upon his potential replacement. Now that he has been sacked, several names have emerged as the next potential United managers.
Ruben Amorim Likely Replacement For Ten Hag
While the likes of Graham Potter and Zinedine Zidane were speculated as the Ten Hag replacement for months now, Sporting manager Ruben Amorim has now emerged as the favourite to take charge in Manchester.
An injury forced him to retire from playing football at the age of 32. The 39-year-old Portuguese manager managed Braga before getting the Sporting Lisbon job in 2020. In his first job with the team, he won the Portuguese Premier Liga, which was the club’s first league title win since 2001-01, a span of 19 years.
His stint at Sporting has been quite successful, winning the league twice, the domestic cup on two occasions, and the domestic shield once as well.
Ruben has now emerged as the favorite to become the new manager of Manchester United. Football journalist Fabrizio Romano has now broken the news that he has given an initial green light to the Red Devils and is looking to join the club. His joining now depends on the negotiation between the clubs.
“Ruben Amorim has given initial green light to Man United. He’s keen on joining the club, accepting the project and the terms discussed. Amorim respects Sporting… and so it depends on club-to-club negotiation now. Exit clause for top clubs is around €10m,” tweeted Romano.
14th in the Premier League and 21st in the UEFA Europa League, Manchester United lost their most recent match 2-1 to West Ham. They will now face Leicester City in a Round of 16 clash in the EFL Cup on Thursday, October 31, before facing Chelsea in their next league match on Sunday, November 3.
