Rohit Sharma To Quit Captaincy If IND Lose CT: Will Indian Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma give up the captaincy if his team ends up losing the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final to New Zealand? Recent reports suggest that this might be the case.
Sharma overtook the national team captaincy in late 2021 after India’s disastrous run in the T20 World Cup that year. Since then, Rohit has captained the team through many highs and lows. While the Men in Blue did lose a Test series at home to the Kiwis and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under, the team also won the 2024 T20 World Cup. Then came major disappointments like losing in the finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship final that year.
After winning the T20 World Cup last year, Rohit retired from T20Is, handing the captaincy in that format to Suryakumar Yadav. The veteran opener now captains the Indian ODI and Test sides.

Despite being a World Cup-winning captain, the Hitman’s captaincy has been under threat since losing the BGT 2024-25 to Australia. After the ongoing CT 2025, the next major tournament Rohit is in line to captain is the 2027 ODI World Cup. With just over two years remaining in the WC, if India is to find their next captain, they have to lock in a name soon.
This is where the discussion surrounding Sharma’s future as the Indian Cricket Team captain comes in. He has led the team to the final of the Champions Trophy. India topped Group A by defeating Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand. Then, the team defeated Australia in the semifinal to make it to the ultimate game of the competition.

Now, Dainik Jagran has reported that Rohit Sharma might be planning to retire, not only as a captain of the national team if India fails to defeat the Black Caps in the final.
According to the report, a BCCI source stated that Rohit would likely give up his captaincy if India loses the final and will continue as a player in the ODIs and T20s. A similar fate befell Virat Kohli after a string of ICC tournament losses, as he too had to give up captaincy across all formats in 2021 but continued playing for the national team.
If the 37-year-old gives up the captaincy, who will take up the mantle of being the captain of the Indian Cricket Team? While the likes of Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah make strong cases, the most obvious choice would be the current vice-captain, Shubman Gill.
As for the India Vs New Zealand final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, it will be played on March 9 in the Dubai International Stadium.
