Rohit Sharma To Not Retire From ODI After CT Win: Indian Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma has made a definitive statement concerning his future in ODI cricket in the post-match press conference after the CT 2025 final. Said that he is not retiring from the format and that he wants to put any rumours to rest.
India took on New Zealand in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 today in the Dubai International Stadium. The Kiwis won the toss, decided to bat first on a spin-friendly track, and put on 251 runs.
The final saw both teams with four spinners in their squad. While India had an array of full-time spin bowlers in Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel, New Zealand had only two full-time spinners in Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell, with Glenn Phillips and Rachin Ravindra being part-timers.
While chasing a small but tricky total of 252, India got off to a flying start, scoring at over a run-a-ball in the powerplay and the opening partnership being worth 105 runs. And while Shubman Gill scored a decent 31, it was Rohit who stole the show, not only of the opening partnership but of the entire inning.

The skipper scored 76 in 83. After his dismissal, his team struggled but finally crossed the finish line, winning the match by four wickets and six deliveries to spare. Despite some decent scores coming in from the middle order, Rohit Sharma was clearly the best batter on the day and was named the Player of the Match.
Sharma, after leading India to the 2023 ODI World Cup final and winning the 2024 T20 World Cup, came into the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy at the age of 37. His performances in this tournament before the final were lacklustre, scoring 104 runs in four matches while trying to give his team good starts.
Before the India vs New Zealand final, rumours and speculations were abound that Rohit Sharma might retire from ODI cricket, or at least give the captaincy up, following the ultimate game against the Black Caps.
He pulled a similar move after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup, after which the Hitman announced his retirement from T20I cricket.

But this time around, that was not the case. After winning the final, Rohit Sharma took questions in a press conference. However, at the end of the event, the Indian Cricket Team captain addressed the media and said in definitive terms that he is not retiring from ODI cricket for now. He said,
“I am not going to retire from this format. Just to make sure no rumours are spread going forward.”

While ODI cricket falls in popularity as the biggest international teams play the format less and less, there is only one possible reason as to why Rohit would not retire from the ODIs, and that is to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. And while he might not be the captain for all that time, it would be interesting to see the final few years of a legend’s career.
