A massive bus parade to celebrate India’s victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup took place in Mumbai on July 4. Indian Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma has now commented on the massive support displayed by the fans towards the team and their victory.
Despite the final taking place on June 29, Team India took a few days to reach India due to a hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean. So after spending a few days in Barbados following the final, India arrived at the shores of Mumbai last evening.
What followed could only be described as a wave of people, as thousands descended on the streets of the city that never sleeps. The bus parade saw the India team and a few other distinguished guests stand on the roof of a double-decker bus and wave to the lakhs of people that surrounded them.
The bus then reached Wankhede Stadium, which was jam-packed with fans. There, the players showcased the trophy, celebrated, and thanked the fans for their support.
Rohit Sharma Thanked Fans During Bus Parade
Rohit Sharma, who won his first World Cup trophy since 2007, thanked the crowd that was present in the stadium to cheer on India. While thanking everyone responsible for the World Cup win, he had this to say:
“Along with all the players who have represented the country and all the people who have been wanting us to win this trophy, this trophy belongs to them. Obviously, Mumbai never disappoints when it comes to winning the trophy. I would like to thank all the fans. For the last 11 years, they have wanted this trophy to come here, and we have finally brought it here, and I am relieved.”
India faced South Africa in the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados’ Kensington Oval. While batting first, the Men in Blue saw three wickets fall within the powerplay before Virat Kohli and Axar Patel stabilized the inning. A solid 76-run inning by Kohli and some late slogging took India to an above-par score of 176.
In response, South Africa lost early wickets as well, but fine innings by Tristan Stubs, Quinton de Kock, and especially Heinrich Klassen took the Proteas to needing just 30 runs in as many deliveries.
But then came some of the best death bowling ever showcased on the world stage, as India’s pace trio of Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya clawed the game back as India won the game by seven wickets.
This win made Rohit Sharma only the third captain in Indian cricket history to win a World Cup. This was also the country’s first ICC trophy since the 2013 Champions Trophy.
