Rohit Sharma Stand To Open At Wankhede Stadium: Indian Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma will have a crowd stand at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium named after him. He will join some of the biggest names in the history of Indian cricket as his name gets picked for a stand at his home ground.
Across the world, cricket stadiums see certain stands inside them being named after some of the great cricketers that hail from that town. For example, there is a Don Bradman Stand at the SCG, a Sourav Ganguly stand at the Eden Gardens, and stands named after Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
However, this honour only becomes bigger in Mumbai. The capital of Maharashtra arguably has the biggest legacy of cricket and successful cricketers in the world. There have been dozens of cricketers from this city who have played for the national team, and several have been legends of the game.
Rohit Sharma Stand To Open At Wankhede Stadium
Some of the names that have been immortalised in stand names just at the Wankhede Stadium are Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, and Vijay Merchant. Not only are these some of the greatest cricketers to come out of Mumbai, but they all, at some point in time, could claim to be the best cricketer in the country.
Now, the latest name to join the likes of Tendulkar and Gavaskar in getting a stand of their name at the Wankhede is Rohit Sharma. The captain of the national team in ODIs and Tests, Sharma is a two-time T20 World Champion, winning the 2024 World Cup as the captain.

He is also the most successful skipper in the history of the Indian Premier League. In the 11 seasons he captained the Mumbai Indians, he led the team to five IPL titles. He, as a player, has six titles under his belt, the most for any player.
But it is as a player that Rohit’s legacy is one of the most stellar in Indian cricket. Considered one of, if not the most gifted batsman of his generation, the 37-year-old has scored 67 Tests and has scored 4301 runs at an average of over 40. He also has 4231 runs in 159 T20Is at an average of 32.05 and a strike rate of over 140.
However, it is in ODIs where Rohit has shone the most. In 273 innings, Sharma has scored 11168 runs at an average of 48.76. He also has 32 hundreds in the format, which is the third most in history, only behind Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. Not only that, but the Indian skipper also has the highest score in ODI cricket of 264. He has also scored the most double-centuries in the format, with three.
Sharma is currently playing for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025. Neither his nor his side’s season is going particularly great at the moment.
With all those accolades to his name, it is to no one’s surprise that the Wankhede Stadium will open a new Rohit Sharma-named stand soon.
