Rohit Sharma set to be retained by Mumbai Indians: There have been several rumors and speculations over the last couple of months about senior Mumbai Indians batsman and opener Rohit Sharma regarding his potential release from the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega-auction. But the rumors have all but been quashed now.
Rohit was replaced as the captain of the franchise whom he led to five IPL titles by Hardik Pandya ahead of the IPL 2024 auction after MI traded in Pandya from the Gujarat Titans. Pandya led GT to a title win and a runners-up position in IPL 2022 and 2023 after being released by MI, for whom he played from 2015 to 2021.
But with Rohit failing to deliver another title for three consecutive seasons and his being over the age of 35, MI made a coup to trade in Pandya. However, the season didn’t pan out as the franchise owners had expected, as MI finished at the bottom of the points table.
Weeks after the season ended, reports began to emerge that Rohit was unhappy with the franchise and would want to be released back in the auction pool for the mega-auction, where he could be bought by another franchise. Rohit’s stocks further increased after he led India to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy right after the IPL.

Rohit Sharma set to be retained by Mumbai Indians—Reports
Now, though, journalist Rohit Juglan of RevSportz has confidently claimed that Rohit is set to be retained by MI and the 37-year-old is not going anywhere.
Rohit retired from T20Is after leading India to the T20 World Cup title. However, he remains one of the most destructive openers in the world—as evident by his exploits in the T20 World Cup and July’s ODI series in Sri Lanka—and is an experienced campaigner. Plus, the Mumbai Indians franchise and their fans have a deep connection with Rohit. So, it’s unlikely that MI will release their premier player.
The IPL 2025 mega auction is expected to take place in either December or January. The BCCI is set to confirm the retention rules in September.
Journalist Rohit Juglan has reported that the BCCI will allow four retentions and will also give the franchises two Right To Match cards for the auction. With the RTM card, the franchise can buy back their released player for the price that he gets sold in the auction. Further, the much-debated Impact Player rule is also going to be continued in IPL 2025 despite widespread criticism.
