Rohit was opted out due to a streak of lackluster performances, which he continues in IPL 2025 as well.
On behalf of Rohit, it was Jusprit Bumrah who got the captain’s armband. Young opener Shubman Gill replaced the skipper in that Test.

In the Beyond23 Podcast on YouTube, Rohit opened up about his decision. According to him, it was he who talked to the coach to give Gill a chance to play at his own cost.
“We somehow wanted Shubman Gill to play the Sydney Test. He’s such a good player. I spoke to Gambhir and the selector. You try to put the team first and what the team wants, make the decision accordingly, so I decided to drop myself,” Rohit Sharma on Shubman Gill.
Rohit also talked about the bowler’s fitness ahead of the England vs India series. He showed confidence that a fully fit Team India would thrive in English soil.
“We want Bumrah, Shami, and other bowlers to be 100% fit for the England tour,” he said. If we have a fully fit tea,m then obviously we’ll have a great series in England. It’s going to be a good challenge for us in England,” he continued.
The India tour of England will have 5 Tests, and the first one will commence on June 20 in Leeds. The final Test will be played from Jul 31 at The Oval.
