Rohit Sharma Opens Up About CWC Final Loss: Indian Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma has fired back at some of the unwarranted criticism he has faced for India’s loss in the 2023 Cricket World Cup final loss to Australia on Sunday, November 19.
The best team in the tournament going into the finals, India took on an Australian team who found their mojo in the tournament after a tumultuous start. Put to bat first by Aussie captain Pat Cummins, India notched up a sub-par total of 240. While Rohit himself provided a solid start by scoring 47 off 31, and Viral Kohli and KL Rahul scored fighting half-centuries, the rest of the batting order collapsed. This was something that had not happened in the tournament as of yet.
Now defending this total, India took three wickets in the powerplay overs as it looked like we were back to the status quo of India dominating this tournament. But then, Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head put up a mammoth 192-run partnership to seal the deal for The Kangaroos, who won their sixth World Cup. Head himself won the Player of the Match award for scoring a dominating 137.

Following India’s loss in the final there were some potentially valid criticism regarding Rohit Sharma’s use of bowlers as the captain on the day. While there is always some valid criticism when a team loses, it is also true that some go overboard in their criticisms.

Rohit Sharma is a great captain with the pedigree to boot, and one loss does not discredit his entire history and make him a bad captain. This is something The Hitman himself stated following the disappointing loss to Australia.
“You read the situation, the scoreboard and try and make the right moves. Sometimes, things work, sometimes, they don’t. You must be prepared for that. If I know that whatever calls we make, it is in the best interests of the team, it’s fine. I know how this whole thing works, one bad game and I will become a bad captain,” said Rohit in the post-match conference.
Having lost yet another ICC trophy knockout match, India can do nothing but look forward to next year’s T20 World Cup. The journey to the 2024 tournament in the USA and West Indies starts with a 5-match T20I series against Australia starting November 23, where India will surely be looking to take some revenge against the Aussies.
