Rohit Sharma On What Team India Focuses On: Indian Cricket Team Captain Rohit Sharma believes that India has a target on its back and that every international team wants to defeat them. However, the skipper stressed that his team just focuses on their own strengths.
Sharma, who won the 2024 T20 World Cup as the captain, has now retired from the shortest format of the international game alongside veterans like Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja. He now only plays n and captains the ODI and Test sides.
The ICT is currently on a break. They played their last games in and against Sri Lanka in August. The tour against the Lankan Lions was not too successful. With several new and young players in the side, India did win the T20I series 3-0 but was thumped 2-0 in the ODIs.
India will next face Bangladesh in two Tests and three T20Is after over a month-long break, which is rare for the national team. And while India will face New Zealand and South Africa at home after Bangladesh, all these series are a prelude to the much looked-forward-to Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.
India has played only five Test matches this year, the five-match series against England at home, which the Men in Blue won 3-1. After the two Tests against the Bangla Tigers, there will be three more against New Zealand and then five against the Aussies down under.
Rohit Sharma On What Team India Focuses On
In a recent press conference ahead of the Bangladesh tour, Rohit sat in a press conference to answer a few questions. During the event, the 37-year-old claimed that neither he nor his team focuses on the opposition but rather on their own strengths.
“Every team wants to beat India, they all enjoy that, let them enjoy. We have played a lot of cricket against a variety of teams. We will focus on our own game. When England came, they also spoke a lot in the press conferences, but we do not focus on that. We try to play good cricket and not think too much about opposition,” he said.
The Hitman then went on to claim that even if the team won the 2024 T20 World Cup, which was the national team’s first World Cup win in 13 years, they are not planning to take their foot off the pedal, saying,
“Talks will start happening around how we lost bilateral series if we don’t win. I am not sure how it works for other teams; I can only talk about India. Every series is important for us. We won’t relax just because we have won a trophy, it doesn’t work like that.”
Most players in the team for the Tests against Bangladesh were playing domestic cricket in the month-long international break. In fact, the ongoing Duleep Trophy played a big role in the team selection for the two games. Meanwhile, veterans like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah took a break from all cricket.
The first India vs Bangladesh Test will be played in Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium from September 19.
