Rohit Sharma Announces Retirement From T20Is: Indian captain Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from T20 internationals following India’s victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup.
India took on South Africa in the final of the tournament at Barbados’ Kensington Oval. While batting first, India lost some early wickets before Virat Kohli and Axar Patel stabilized the inning. Ultimately, on the back of Kohli’s 76-off-59, India reached a total of 176.
While chasing, South Africa lost early wickets as well, but then fine innings by Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs and an explosive half-century by Heinrich Klaasen brought South Africa to just 30 runs away from the target with five overs remaining.
But from here, the game took a big turn. Brilliant bowling performances by Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Arshdeep Singh led India to a seven-run victory.
Rohit Sharma, who got out after hitting a couple of boundaries in the second over, has led India to the trophy from the front. In eight innings, Rohit has scored 257 runs and is the second-highest scorer in this tournament. He scored three 50s in this World Cup; two of them came against Australia and England.
Having led India to their third ICC final in 12 months, Rohit Sharma became only the third Indian captain after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni to win a World Cup.
Some of the most memorable visuals following the game came from Rohit Sharma, who wept after India won the match.
Rohit Sharma Announces Retirement From T20Is
When being announced the Player of the Match, Virat Kohli announced his retirement from T20Is. Rohit gave the news some time to set in. In the post-game conference, the skipper announced his retirement from the format as well.
“This was my last game as well. I’ve enjoyed it since the time I started playing this format. I’ve loved every moment of this. This is what I wanted—I wanted to win the cup,” Rohit said in the press conference.
Rohit Sharma is one of only two players who have played in every edition of the T20 World Cup. Starting his journey in 2007, a young Rohit played a big role in India’s triumph in the inaugural tournament.
Now, 17 years later, Rohit Sharma has retired from T20 internationals on top once again, winning the cup for the second time in his career.
Rohit Sharma has retired from T20Is, but he will continue to play for India in ODIs and Tests, something he clarified in the same conference. He will also likely continue to play T20 cricket in the IPL.
