Parag is captaining Royals for the first 3 games of the IPL 2025 as the skipper Sanju Samson is only available for batting due to injury. Parag, being a homegrown boy, will help the franchise to attract a lot of crowds from the northeastern part of the country.

Riyan Parag said that the manager’s trust in him to lead the team in the absence of Samsonis is a big deal for him. He also showed optimism that the familiar condition will help the team against the defending champions.
“Really looking forward to first home game. We are familiar with the conditions. We practiced here, we had a few camps here. So yeah, really looking forward to what we can do and put on a show tonight. it’s been a journey. I was here when I was 17 years old. And most importantly, me being captain, that’s secondary. But the trust that the manager showed in me, I think that’s one of the biggest points. Because of that, I take personally as a player that they are trusting me enough to lead the team and trusting me enough to let me make my own decisions. So I think it’s a very big thing for me.”

Riyan Parag didn’t have a nice captaincy debut as RR got thrashed by SRH in the initial game of the 2025 IPL. After the match, his measures as a captain were criticized by the fans and pundits.
Things aren’t different for KKR either, as the Kolkata franchise lost to Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the first game.
