With the score tied 1-1 in the 73rd minute, The Blues striker Noni Madueke looked to start a counter-attack, Richards, who was the central midfielder for Palace, immediately looked to put a stop to the attack and went in for the tackle.

The way the USMNT midfielder brought Madueke down certainly demanded a foul. So referee Michael Salisbury instantly gestured for a Chelsea free-kick. But it must have come as a shock to many when the ref then pulled out a red card for Richards.
As per the Ref Accidentally Shows Red Card To Player, But it was never supposed to be a red card in the referee’s mind. So as soon as he realised what he had done, Salisbury instantly waved his hand and pulled out a yellow card instead.

While Crystal Palace would be relieved at the moment, their emotions did not last long as, in the 87th minute, Palace conceded a penalty. And who else was there to convert but Noni Madueke?
That goal meant that Chelsea went up 2-1 in the last minutes of the game, the scoreline that the match ended with. This result has kept Chelsea right in the middle of the Premier League points table at 10th.
On the other hand, this loss for Crystal Palace sees them remain in 15th, within reach of the relegation place sides.
