Records broken in PBKS vs KKR: In a jaw-dropping, unbelievable piece of batting, Punjab Kings chased the target of 262 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders in match number 42 of the IPL 2024 at the Eden Gardens on Friday night.
Such has been the run-chasing and six-hitting height this season that this game was a reflection of it all. It is indeed apt that this run-chase of 262 came in what has already been the most high-scoring IPL season ever.
Cracking knocks from Phil Salt (75 off 37) and Sunil Narine (71 off 32) set up KKR’s base for other batters to take them to 262. The reply from PBKS was even more sensational.
Jonny Bairstow batted throughout the innings to clatter 108* (48), and around him came two mind-blowing knocks: 54 (20) from Prabhsimran Singh and 68* (28) from Shashank Singh, as PBKS won with 8 balls to spare. And that was despite Narine conceding only 24 runs in his four overs; the rest five of KKR’s proper bowlers all leaked more than 13 runs an over.
3 biggest records broken in PBKS vs KKR:
Highest successful run chase in men’s T20 cricket
Not just in the IPL, but this is now the record for the highest successful run-chase in men’s T20 cricket’s history. The previous one was 259 runs by South Africa against West Indies in 2023 in Centurion. In the IPL, the highest target successfully chased down was 224 by Rajasthan Royals against Punjab Kings in 2020 in Sharjah.
Most sixes in a men’s T20 match
There were a total of 42 sixes hit in this match (18 by KKR and 24 by PBKS). 42 sixes in this clash were the most sixes hit in a men’s T20 game, surpassing the tally of 38 sixes in the SRH vs MI in Hyderabad and the RCB vs SRH in Bangalore this season.
So the three matches with the most sixes in men’s T20 cricket have all come in IPL 2024.
Most sixes in an IPL innings
The 24 sixes by Punjab Kings are now also the most number of sixes in an IPL innings. Previously, SRH held the record for their tally of 22 sixes against RCB and DC each in their clashes earlier in IPL 2024.
Overall, in T20 cricket, only Nepal has hit more sixes: 26 against Mongolia in Hangzhou at the Asian Games 2023.
