Ravichandran Ashwin On ODIs Becoming Obselete: Former Indian Cricket Team bowler Ravichandran Ashwin recently questioned if ODI cricket should be a regular fixture of international cricket in the future and whether the format has become obsolete in modern-day cricket.
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is currently underway. The tournament was discontinued after 2017 but has now been revived. The 2025 edition is being hosted by defending champions Pakistan, with India’s matches being played in Dubai. Barring one game, most games in the competition so far have been monotonous and one-sided.
The recent match between Afghanistan and England was an outlier in an otherwise dull tournament. Having scored 325 on the back of a brilliant 177 by Ibrahim Zadran, Afghanistan defended the total against a batting-heavy side in England.

Questions regarding ODI cricket have been raised for a few years now. With the growing popularity of T20 cricket, many doubt whether ODI cricket should even be one of the big three formats in international cricket.
This question was most recently raised by Ravichandran Ashwin, who is a former Champions League and ODI World Cup winner. In a recent video on his Hindi YouTube channel, ‘Ash Ki Baat,’ the legendary Indian spinner discussed how the Afghanistan vs England match was a highlight in an otherwise monotone CT 2025, saying,
“Before this Afghanistan versus England match, I was wondering whether there is any future for ODI cricket. Until this Afghanistan vs England game, this Champions Trophy was just so monotonous.”

Ashwin then went on to question the importance of ODI cricket in today’s cricket environment. With T20 cricket becoming the dominant white-ball format and Test cricket, with its history and long matches, being a crucial novelty, ODI cricket is becoming increasingly unimportant and is in danger of becoming obsolete altogether.
With the next ODI World Cup to be played in South Africa in 2027, the former Indian Cricket Team player raised some serious questions about the ICC’s ability to host that competition successfully.
The 50-over World Cup (2027) in South Africa is going to be a real challenge for the ICC. It is at the brink of a decision being made. Because the game is going so slow. It’s meandering along. I have a question in my mind: is there a place for 50 overs in today’s cricket?” pointed Ashwin.
As far as the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is concerned, India has won their first two matches in Group A against Bangladesh and Pakistan and has already made it to the semifinals. The result of the last group game against New Zealand will decide both of these teams’ opponents in the knockout round.
