Ravichandran Ashwin Now Has The Most WTC Wickets: Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has surpassed Australian tweaker Nathan Lyon to become the highest wicket taker in the history of the World Test Championship during the Indian Cricket Team’s ongoing Test match against New Zealand.
Today is Day One of the second India vs New Zealand Test match of the three-match series. The match is being played at a turning track at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune, with the Kiwis winning the toss and deciding to bat first.
On a pitch where the scoring will become difficult as the match proceeds, the first session of the day was a frustrating one for India. The hosts only managed to take two wickets and conceded 92 runs in 31 overs. But someone who had a fine session is India’s veteran spinner Ashwin, who became the highest wicket taker in WTC history.
The 38-year-old came into this match with 186 wickets in 38 Test matches since the conception of the World Test Championship in 2019. Currently, the third rendition of the two-year tournament is going on. India has made it to the final on both occasions so far but is yet to win the competition.
In the history of the WTC, Australia’s Nathan Lyon was the highest wicket-taker in all the editions of the competition, with 187 scalps in 43 matches. Ashwin, before today, was just one wicket behind Lyon.

Ravichandran Ashwin Now Has The Most WTC Wickets
In the eighth over of the New Zealand inning, ‘Anna’ caught captain Tom Latham in front of the wicket. The umpire signalled out as the legendary spinner equalled Lyon’s record.
Then, in the 24th over of the inning, after Devon Conway and Will Young had frustrated Indian bowlers to no-end, Ashwin bowled a ball down the leg side to Young, which was collected by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. No one was interested in appealing except Sarfaraz Khan at forward short leg.
Sarfaraz, coupled with Virat Kohli, then had to convince captain Rohit Sharma to take a review, which he did. UltraEdge showed that the ball had slightly clipped Young’s gloves as it went through to the keeper. This was Ravichandran Ashwin’s second wicket of the
day. But more importantly, it was his 188th wicket in the World Test Championship, making him the highest wicket-taker in tournament history.
Ashwin is already the highest wicket-taker of the current WTC cycle, having taken 56 wickets in just 12 matches so far. In this list, Australia’s Josh Hazelwood is second with 51 scalps in 11 games.
