Ravi Shastri Recalls Bumrah Vs Anderson Incident: Former Indian cricketer and World Cup winner Ravi Shastri has opened up about his thoughts on the much talked about ‘spirit of cricket’ while discussing the infamous incident between James Anderson and Jasprit Bumrah.
Shastri became the head coach of the national team in 2017. During his tenure, the team won the most international matches for any side in that period. He was the head coach until the 2021 T20 World Cup.
Not only did India have many famous victories under him, but he instilled a winning mentality in the team like no other. His famous “36 is a badge” speech after India was bowled out for 36 against Australia is something out of a sports flick.

Shastri was India’s coach for the team’s tour to England in 2021. While it was supposed to be a five-Test series, the teams only played four of them, with the fifth being played the next year. In the four Tests played in that series, India won two compared to England’s one.
In order to Ravi Shastri Recalls Bumrah vs Anderson Incident, Arguably the most famous match of that series was played at Lord’s, where India won by 152 runs. England took the lead in the first inning, but when James Anderson came into bat, Bumrah welcomed him with a few bouncers. The English pacer seemingly didn’t like that, complaining that the pacer should not bowl bouncers at one another.

Shastri recently appeared on Ravichandran Ashwin’s YouTube channel, where he discussed how England should’ve declared their inning if their batters were afraid of a few bounces, saying,
“What’s wrong with that? You got a bat in your hand. There’s no rule that tail-enders you shouldn’t (bounce). Then declare the innings, no? If it gets too hot in the kitchen and you don’t want to be there, then stay inside; be clear; your fingers are fine; everything is fine; you can bowl as much as you want so that you’re not injured.”
As Ravi Shastri Recalls Bumrah vs Anderson Incident, In response, the English pacers bowled Bumrah bouncers in the next inning, but the Indian great countered and scored 35 runs in an over with the help of a few extras. This was the highest score in an over in the format’s history.
Shastri then discussed how some players and teams tend to hide behind the ‘spirit of cricket’, that it should only be the rules of the game that should be the standard of action in a sport.
“Forget spirit. I believe in rules. You (Ashwin) mankaded a guy; it is rules; there’s a rule book; observe the damn rules. A guy running two steps ahead, ‘It’s not fair; you should warn me.’ For what warn? The rule says you’re cheating. I hate warnings. I’ll take the bails off straightaway. On your bike now! Rule book, page 33. Don’t whinge and moan after the event. It’s there. It’s the same for both teams,”
said Ravi Shastri.
Shastri gave up the India head coach job in 2021 and is now the commissioner of Legends League Cricket. Meanwhile, his beloved Team India gears up for the 2024 T20 World Cup.
