Ex-Pakistan captain Rashid Latif slammed BCCI for choosing Suryakumar Yadav over Hardik Pandya.
What Happened?
Hardik Pandya was expected to take the throne from Rohit Sharma after the latter decided to retire from T20Is. And former’s name was everywhere until BCCI’s decision came out which surprised a lot of people in the country. The decision was to name Suryakumar Yadav as the T20 captain over Hardik Pandya
The reason that Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the selection committee, was seemingly bizarre for a lot of fans and critics. According to Agarkar, Pandya’s fitness concern is the reason why Suryakumar got the slot.
“He (Hardik) is still a very important player for us, and we want him to be the player that he can be because those sorts of skill sets are very difficult to find. Fitness has been a challenge for him over the last few years, and then it becomes a bit more difficult for a coach or even us, the selectors.”
“Now we have got a bit more time until the next T20 World Cup, where we can look at a few things. It is not rushed at the moment. He is an important player for us, and performances are more important. That was the thought behind it. Fitness is a clear challenge, and we want someone who is likely to be available more often than not.”
Rashid Latif Slams BCCI for Ducking Hardik Pandya
Latif said that BCCI should hand a certificate declaring that Pandya is unfit. The former Pakistan captain sees the reason as an excuse.
“They should simply hand him a certificate declaring him unfit, citing concerns about his fitness. However, many great captains have succeeded despite not being in peak physical condition. Therefore, I believe this was merely an excuse. If Suryakumar Yadav was unavailable, Rishabh Pant would have been the logical choice for captain, as far as future is concerned.”
