Rashid Khan penalised for throwing bat: The ICC has penalised Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan for throwing his bat at batting partner Karim Janat out of anger when he denied a run by his teammate during their Super 8 match against Bangladesh in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
The ICC has charged Rashid with a level 1 breach of the code of conduct for his actions in Kingstown on July 24.
During the last over of Afghanistan’s innings, Rashid had miscued a ball on the offside. He and Karim Janat sprinted for the first run, but with a Bangladeshi fielder doing a slight misfield, Rashid began to run for the second run, which would have brought him back on strike. However, Janat, who was now at the striker’s end, refused to run for the second run as he sensed danger.
Rashid, now almost mid-pitch, was enraged and in anger hurled his bat at Janat. His bat flew and landed near Janat’s foot as Rashid returned to the non-striker’s end.
Rashid Khan penalised for throwing bat: ICC hands Rashid one demerit point, fines 50 percent match fee
Ahead of Afghanistan’s semi-final against South Africa in Trinidad, the ICC reprimanded the Afghan skipper with one demerit point and handed him 50 percent match-fee fine.
One demerit point has been added to Khan’s disciplinary record; it was his first offence in a 24-month period. Collection of two more demerit points in this 24-month period will see Rashid get suspended for a few games, depending on the impending schedule if and when he gets suspended.
Nonetheless, Rashid played a huge role in Afghanistan’s victory over Bangladesh. He first scored 19 runs off 10 balls and then picked up four middle-order wickets, helping his side to an eight-run win that saw them enter the semi-finals of a T20 World Cup for the first time in their history.
Their semi-final against South Africa is scheduled for June 26 in Trinidad.
