Randy Orton On Similarities With Gunther: WWE Superstar and legend Randy Orton recently opened up and revealed the similarities between him and current World Heavyweight Champion Gunther while looking back at his own career.
The Viper will take on The Ring General at WWe’s upcoming Premium Live Event Bash In Berlin on August 31, which will be the company’s first PLE in Germany and will take place in Berlin’s Uber Arena for the world title.
This is Gunther’s first major title defense since winning the belt from Damian Priest at SummerSlam. This is the 37-year-old’s first world title in WWE, but not his first championship. The Austrian native was the face of the NXT UK brand as their champion for over two years. More recently, he was the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in history, losing the championship to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40 after a 666-day title reign.
Orton, who is a 14-time World Champion in WWE, is in a position as a veteran who will help in legitimizing a promising star’s title reign. But there was a time when he was on the other side of this equation.
While the Apex Predator won his first world title in 2004, he did not become a proper full-time main eventer till 2007. At the No Mercy 2007 show, Randy won the WWE Championship for the first time, losing and winning the title back again on the same night, at which point his true stay in the main event started.
Randy Orton On Similarities With Gunther
During what was his third world title reign (second with the WWE Championship), Orton took on Shawn Michael on multiple occasions, the most high-profile of them being at the 2007 Survivor Series. In that match, Randy was in a position where Gunther would be at Bash In Berlin, a new world champion taking on a legend of the business.
In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Randy Orton opened up about how he once was in a situation where The Ring General finds himself today.
“When I was in that position, I was so young, I was just doing what they told me and doing it to the best of my ability, but to be able to really let it marinate and understand how important what Shawn did for me was, I don’t think I realised it till years later. But if that was 2007, I had been going for about four or five years and being pushed; I had the rocket strapped to my back. And I can see a lot of similarities between me and Gunther. Gunther is in the same position, but he’s more seasoned,” he said.
Orton then went on to say that Gunther is a little older than he himself was in 2007 and that the former IC Champion is up for the opportunity, adding,
“When I was in that position, I was so young, I was just doing what they told me and doing it to the best of my ability, but to be able to really let it marinate and understand how important what Shawn did for me was, I don’t think I realised it till years later. But if that was 2007, I had been going for about four or five years and being pushed; I had the rocket strapped to my back. And I can see a lot of similarities between me and Gunther. Gunther is in the same position, but he’s more seasoned.”
If Randy Orton wins the World Heavyweight Championship in Berlin, he will be a 15-time world champion in WWE. This will put him one title away from John Cena and Ric Flair, who hold the record for the most world titles with 16.
