Rahul Dravid revealed the name of the person who convinced him to stay as India’s head coach following the devastating loss in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup against Australia.
Dravid announced the 2024 T20 World Cup would be his final tournament as the head coach of India. He will be ending his tenure as India’s first World Cup-winning coach in 13 years.
An emotional moment for ‘The Wall’, who won his first World Cup in any capacity, the joy and relief could be seen all across his face following India’s seven-run win over South Africa in the final. His aggressive celebration was very unlike Rahul Dravid, which shows how big this moment was for him.
On a completely different side of the spectrum, there is the loss in the 2023 World Cup final. India had won all 10 of their matches in the tournament on the way to the final on home soil. Despite being the best side in the tournament, India ended up losing in the final to Australia, a team they had defeated earlier in the competition.
Following that loss, several of India’s biggest players could be seen shedding a tear. Someone who also shed a few tears was Rahul Dravid.
Following the 2023 World Cup, reports emerged that Dravid might quit the post of India’s head coach. But it was soon clarified that he would keep the job up until the end of the 2024 T20 World Cup, at which point his contract would expire. A few days ago, the 51-year-old confirmed that he would not be renewing his contract.
Following the recent World Cup win, Rahul Dravid gave a farewell speech in the Indian dressing room. While addressing the room and congratulating them all, he brought the discussion to that loss against Australia.
The Details of the Rahul Dravid Retirement Speech
While discussing the 2023 World Cup and its aftermath, Rahul Dravid revealed that team captain Rohit Sharma had reached out to him following the loss in the final to ask him to continue to be the head coach.
“Ro (Rohit), thank you for reaching out in November and inviting me to continue. It has been a true privilege and pleasure to work with all of you. I’m grateful for the opportunity and for the many engaging discussions, we’ve had as captain and coach—times when we’ve agreed and times when we’ve disagreed. Getting to know each of you has been amazing. Thank you for your time,” said Dravid in his farewell speech.
