Rahul Dravid Explains Luck Factor to Win A WC: Rahul Dravid concluded his tenure as India’s head coach on a high as the Men In Blue won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy in June by defeating South Africa in the final.
Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma ended India’s 11-year wait for an ICC title. This wait could have ended last year as well, but India lost the finals of the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup, both to Australia and both times to blistering centuries from Travis Head.
Sometimes you need a little bit of luck: Rahul Dravid Explains Luck Factor to Win A WC
Rahul Dravid touched upon the luck factor as a crucial difference between India’s loss in the World Cup 2023 final in Ahmedabad and the victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 final in Barbados.
South Africa were in a strong position when they required 30 runs in 30 balls, but India kept their calm to remain alive in the game. The 51-year-old former India coach pointed out that Suryakumar Yadav was just inches away from touching the boundary line in this stunning catch in the last over of David Miller.
On the flip side, Dravid recalled, the Indian bowlers beat Travis Head’s bat multiple times in the final last year, but the Aussie opener survived those close chances and then hammered a century.
“Sometimes, at the end of the day, you need a little bit of luck. Against South Africa, 30 balls to go, 30 runs to go. It was about incredible execution and incredible calmness by Rohit,” Dravid said.
“We didn’t focus on what we needed to do, but we needed a guy (Suryakumar) who could keep his foot within one inch of a line. Sometimes (it is) the skill.”
“(On) 19th November, I remember whatever it was, we beat Travis Head’s bat 15 times—he didn’t touch a single ball. You know, things can go your way sometimes, but you have to stick to the process,” he added.
Speaking about Dravid, he’s currently away from cricket and is spending time with his family. According to reports, Dravid is in talks with the Rajasthan Royals to become their head coach ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, as Kumar Sangakkara is likely to leave the franchise and take up the role of England’s white-ball coach.
