Rahul Dravid confirms leaving India coach role: Ahead of India’s opening fixture in the T20 World Cup 2024 against Ireland, Rahul Dravid has confirmed that he will not reapply for the role of India’s head coach.
The 51-year-old former India captain said he has made this decision considering the heavy schedule of the Indian team and “the stage of my life” he is in with his family.
Dravid became India’s head coach in late 2021, replacing Ravi Shastri. Under Dravid, India reached the finals of the World Test Championship and the World Cup 2023 but lost them both to Australia. India also reached the semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022, which they lost to England. India won the home Test series against England and Australia and clinched the Asia Cup last year.
I’ve loved doing the job: Rahul Dravid confirms leaving India coach role
His contract will expire at the conclusion of the ongoing T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA, and he has confirmed he will not reapply.
Dravid said, “Every tournament is important. Every game that I have coached for India is important for me. For me, this is going to be no different. It is going to be the last tournament that I am going to be in charge of. I’ve loved doing the job. I have really enjoyed coaching India. It’s a truly special job to do. I’ve enjoyed working with this team. It’s a great bunch of boys to work with.
“Considering the kind of schedules and where I find myself in the stage of my life, I don’t think I will be able to reapply. So yeah, it’s going to be my last one. But having said that, it’s going to be no different for me to be honest. From the first day I took the job, every game mattered and that will not change.”

To replace Dravid, the BCCI has approached Gautam Gambhir, who was the mentor of KKR in their title-winning IPL 2024 season. Gambhir has won two IPL titles as KKR’s captain, but the title win this season elevated his position as a coach.
Gambhir recently said that he “would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team.”
He met with BCCI secretary Jay Shah after the IPL final in Chennai.
