R Ashwin Becomes 2nd Most Test Wicket taker In Asia: Senior India off-spinner R Ashwin continues to climb the ladder of Test match bowling and continues to break records after records. Ashwin has reached that stage of his career where even a single wicket can sometimes take him level or past a milestone.
The latest addition to R Ashwin’s record books is that he has now become the Indian bowler with the most Test wickets in Asia, as he surpasses legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble’s tally.
He achieved this feat on day 1 of the ongoing India vs Bangladesh Test match in Kanpur. India had won the first Test in Chennai by 280 runs, in which Ashwin starred with a century in India’s first innings and a six-wicket haul in Bangladesh’s second innings.

In Bangladesh’s first innings on day 1 of the Kanpur Test, Ashwin bowled brilliantly, conceding 22 runs in nine overs while taking the wicket of the opposition’s captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto.
Ashwin set up Shanto superbly. After bowling regular off-breaks that turned a bit away, he bowled a delivery that kept coming into Shanto with Ashwin’s angle. The batter was beaten on the outside edge while playing a defensive shot and was trapped LBW.
The umpire gave Shanto out. The Bangladeshi skipper took a review but to no avail as the ball was projected to be crashing into the stumps. Shanto’s innings was ended by Ashwin at the score of 31.
With this dismissal, Ashwin now has 420 Test wickets in Asia, going past Kumble’s tally of 419. Only Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan is ahead of Ashwin on this list with 612 scalps, a record Ashwin is unlikely to break.
Most Test Wickets in Asia:
- Muttiah Muralitharan – 612
- Ravichandran Ashwin – 420*
- Anil Kumble – 419
- Rangana Herath – 354
- Harbhajan Singh – 300
Meanwhile, day 1 in Kanpur was brought to a premature end as only 35 overs were possible because of rain. The Test match started with a delay of one hour due to a wet outfield that was caused by the overnight rain.
Water poured down at the start of the lunch break, and then after about an hour through the second session, the floodgates opened up heavily and no more play could take place. At stumps on day 1 in Kanpur, Bangladesh are 107/3. Akash Deep dismissed both openers, Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam, in the first session.
