PSG Chairman Criticizes Lionel Messi: What Happened?
Messi, now with Inter Miami in MLS, had previously mentioned that PSG didn’t honor him after the FIFA World Cup triumph in 2022.
Al Khelaifi, in response, expressed his displeasure, stating that discussions should happen while the player is part of the team, not after leaving. He emphasized that such post-departure comments are not in line with the club’s style.
“He (Messi) is not a bad guy but I don’t like it. I’ll say, not just for him but for everyone, we talk when we’re there, not when we’re gone. That’s not our style. I have great respect for him (Messi). But if someone wants to speak badly about Paris Saint-Germain afterward, that’s not good, that’s not respect,” Khelaifi said, as quoted by ESPN.
PSG chiefs continued that, the reason behind the club not conducting a public ceremony after Messi’s World Cup triumph is because Argentina had beaten France in the final. As PSG is a French club, celebrating Messi’s win over France would have annoyed the French
“If anyone talks about the fact that we didn’t celebrate him enough after he won the World Cup, we’re in France and he won against Kylian. We are a French club. I don’t want the whole stadium to be against him either,” Al-Khelaifi.
PSG on the hand had hosted a private appreciation ceremony for the player. Apart from that, they also celebrated during the training. It should also be noted that PSG players had given a Guard of Honour for Messi before PSG’s match. So the criticism of Lionel Messi on the club has to be baseless.
