Predicting India Squad For T20 World Cup 2024: The BCCI selection committee, headed by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, will assemble in the first week of May to select and announce India’s 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup 2024. The mega ICC event of the year will be held in the West Indies and USA in June.
India were knocked out of the semi-final of the last T20 World Cup, in Adelaide by England. Rohit Sharma, who led the side then, has been retained as the captain for this year’s event, as confirmed by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah.
So Rohit will be the first name on the team sheet, and so will Suryakumar Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah. Mohammed Shami, the leading wicket-taker in IPL 2023 and the World Cup 2023, is all but certain to miss the T20 World Cup owing to his ankle surgery.
Apart from Rohit and Bumrah, it is looking very likely that Virat Kohli, too, would walk straight into India’s XI considering his immense success in the T20 World Cups over the years and his being the Orange Cap holder right now in the IPL, even though there had earlier been rumors of the BCCI pondering over excluding Kohli.
Further, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Rinku Singh, and Hardik Pandya are all looking for certainities in the 15-man squad.
The biggest conundrum that the BCCI selectors and the Indian team management are facing right now is the wicketkeeper(s). India are not sure who their first-choice keeper will be in the T20 World Cup.
Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson are the front-runners right now. Samson is in exquisite form currently in the IPL, having scored 246 runs in 5 innings at an average of 82 and strike rate of 157 with three fifties. But Samson is batting at number 3 for RR while India needs a finisher for a keeper.
Pant, who has made his comeback in the IPL 2024, has scored 153 runs for Delhi Capitals in 5 knocks at a strike rate of 154 with two fifties.
Jitesh Sharma is not having a good tournament, while KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan are opening for their respective franchises. Dinesh Karthik, aged 38, might just be too old for another comeback to the national side.
In the bowling department, Bishnoi, Chahal, and Axar are competing for what seems to be one remaining spot in the squad. All three are different kinds of spinners. The BCCI is unlikely to make the surprise selection of uncapped Mayank Yadav, the Lucknow pacer who is at bowling extreme speeds, knocking and bouncing batters for fun.
