Players who have been ruled out of the CT25: The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to kick off on February 19 and will run until March 9. The tournament will be played across four cities: Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Dubai (only India matches).
Eight teams are divided into two groups of four each. Each team will play the other teams in their group once. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.
The Champions Trophy is returning after eight years. Pakistan are the defending champions, having won the trophy in 2017 by beating India in the final at the Oval.
A few teams are grappling with some injury issues with the players they had named in their provisional squads. They are expected to announce replacements in due course. Let us see the players who are ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
List of players who have been ruled out of the CT25:
Mitchell Marsh
Mitchell Marsh was the first Australian player to be ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Marsh suffered a back injury and played only one BBL game in which he didn’t bowl and then missed Perth’s next three BBL games. His availability for the IPL 2025 season is also under doubt.
With Cameron Green also injured, Beau Webster or Jake Fraser-McGurk is likely to replace Marsh in Australia’s Champions Trophy squad.
Pat Cummins
Australia suffered a huge jolt when captain and fast bowler Pat Cummins was ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 tournament due to an ankle injury, which he played through during the Test series against India.
Coach Andrew McDonald has confirmed that either Steve Smith or Travis Head will lead Australia in the Champions Trophy. Sean Abbott is likely to come into the squad for Cummins.
Josh Hazlewood
Josh Hazlewood’s struggles with injuries continue as, after dealing with side and calf injuries during the BGT 2024-25, he sustained a hip injury that has ruled him out of the Champions Trophy.
Hazlewood could be replaced by one of Spencer Johnson, Ben Dwarshuis, leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha, or spin-bowling allrounder Cooper Connolly.
Marcus Stoinis
After injuries to three first-choice players, Australia were dented further when Marcus Stoinis announced a shock retirement from ODI cricket despite being named in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad. Cooper Connolly could be Stoinis’ replacement.
Saim Ayub
Pakistan have suffered a huge blow as in-form opener Saim Ayub is ruled out of the Champions Trophy as he is still recovering from the right ankle injury that he picked up in January in South Africa. Fakhar Zaman, who is returning from a long layoff, is likely to open for Pakistan.
Anrich Nortje
South Africa’s chances to win the Champions Trophy 2025 took a hit when fast bowler Anrich Nortje was ruled out of the competition with a back injury just days after being named in the 15-man provisional squad.
Gerald Coetzee, who has returned from a groin injury, is the likeliest replacement in store for South Africa.
Jacob Bethell
Bethell is the latest one to be out of the CT25. The 21-year-old was in terrific form scoring a fifty in England’s 1st ODI against India. Bethell suffered a hamstring injury in the match and was out from the second ODI. England has called up Tom Banton to replace him.
