PCB accepts hybrid model for ICC Champions Trophy: Although the ICC’s board meeting that was scheduled for December 5th in the UAE was postponed, it has reportedly been confirmed that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has acquiesced to the hybrid model for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 despite their protests earlier and their demands being slashed down.
The PCB chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, had, for the past few months, said in several interviews that the PCB have a firm stance against the hybrid model for next year’s mega men’s ICC event. With the Indian government not permitting the men’s team to travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, a hybrid model was the primary solution that would allow the ICC to break the deadlock between the PCB and the BCCI, though the PCB will remain upset with it.
It has been learned through a report in Cricbuzz that the majority of the 15 board members are in favor of the hybrid model and that it will be voted on when the ICC meets next time, most likely on December 7th, to finalize this situation.
PCB accepts hybrid model for ICC Champions Trophy but on certain conditions
The PCB has reportedly accepted the hybrid model—all of India’s matches, including against Pakistan and the semi-final and final, should they reach it, would be played in the UAE—but are set to make their own demands from the ICC and the BCCI.
Among the top demands from the PCB is that the BCCI will accept a hybrid model for the tournaments they will be hosting in the coming years, and Pakistan’s matches will be played outside India. This demand of the PCB, though, is unlikely to be accepted by the BCCI.
The demand that is set to be agreed upon by the ICC is for a major compensation for the PCB for losing the hosting of India’s matches, especially the India vs Pakistan clash.
The PCB will also purportedly suggest a tri-series involving India at a neutral venue, likely the UAE, but the BCCI is not expected to agree to this either.
Another wish of the PCB that is not being accepted is for Pakistan and India to be placed in different groups, as they could host Pakistan’s all three group-stage matches at home. With the broadcasters paying the ICC the major chunk of their deal just for the India vs Pakistan clash, this demand of the Pakistan board is also set to be quashed.
