Pat Cummins Wants To Win BGT Against India: Australian Cricket Team Test captain Pat Cummins recently discussed how he is looking forward to the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India later this year and said that it’s high time that the Aussies win the trophy back.
Pat has been the latest addition to the long lineage of successful Australian captains. He had a fantastic 2023, as he won the World Test Championship final that year before winning the ODI World Cup in India, defeating the Men in Blue in both finals.
But while the Kangaroos might have won the most recent Test meet between the two nations, it has been India who has been dominant in bilateral series between the two for years.
For the longest time, both teams used to defeat each other at home and lose the series away, with Australia, on occasion, winning in India as well. But after winning the 2016-17 series in India, the team then led by Virat Kohli made it a two-peat by winning a Test series in Australia for the first time in 2018-19, defeating an admittedly weakened squad without Steve Smith and David Warner 2-1.
In 2020-21, the series returned Down Under once again amidst COVID. This time, despite getting all-out for 36 in the first game, losing Kohli after the first game, and losing major players throughout the series, India won the historic series 2-1, defeating a full-strength Australian side and winning the last Test with their third-rate pace attack.
The 2022-23 series, being played in India, was won by the home team 2-1 once again. This means that the Indian Cricket Team has won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy four times in a row, which is a record in the over 75-year-long history of the India-Australia Test series.
Pat Cummins Wants To Win BGT Against India
With the next edition of the historic series to be played in Australia in 2024-25, home team captain Pat Cummins feels confident in hosting what might be the best Test team in the world, saying that he believes that Australia can snatch back the trophy from India.
“The last two series here in Australia, we haven’t been successful, so it’s been a long time. Hopefully, it’s time to make amends. You know, we’ve played them plenty of times where they’ve beaten us, but we’ve also had plenty of wins against them as well, which we’ll draw confidence from,” Cummins told Star Sports in an interview.
Despite all his confidence, the 31-year-old pace bowling allrounder recognises India as a tough competitor, saying that the series will be a 50-50 affair despite being played in their own backyard.
“The most recent Test match was, of course, the World Test Championship in neutral conditions, and we came out on top in that match. It’s always fiercely competitive, and it always feels like it’s 50-50. I’m 10 out of 10 excited for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.”
Australia ended 2023/started 2024 with a 3-0 win in a Test series against Pakistan before drawing a two-match series 1-1 against the West Indies. Their last Test matches, so far, were in a two-match series against New Zealand away, with Cummins’ men winning 2-0.
Australia’s first Test against India will start on November 22 and will be played in the Optus Stadium in Perth. The second, third, and fourth matches, also played in 2024, will be played in the Adelaide Oval, the Gabba (Brisbane), and the Melbourne Cricket Ground, respectively. The fifth and final Test, which will be the first match of 2025, will commence on January 3 and be played in the Sydney Cricket Ground.
