The Group C contest, which was being played in Guyana’s Providence Stadium, saw Uganda win the toss and choose to field first. The African nation turned up with all their bowling stats maxed out as they started wreaking havoc on the PNG batter from the first over itself.
It started with Captain Assad Vala being dismissed for a duck in the first over by the spinning allrounder. Papua New Guinea could never build any momentum, losing wickets at constant intervals.
The batting side lost their top four in just seven overs for 36 runs. At this point, one would assume that the middle-order would look to stabilize the inning, but that did not happen.
Constant wickets kept coming in as it went from 48/5 to 65/7 to 77 all-out. With a below-average score on any surface, Papua New Guinea could still capitalize on the nerves of a team playing their first-ever T20 World Cup.
And that is exactly what it looked like in the early proceedings with Uganda losing three wickets for just six runs in 13 balls. But from this point, Riazat Ali Shah kept a hold on one end, not giving his wicket away.

Uganda lost two more wickets right around the end of the powerplay as the team fell to 26/5. But then, Riazat Ali formed a solid sixth-wicket partnership with all-rounder Juma Miyagi for 35 runs, which practically won the African nation the match.
And while Uganda lost both Miyagi and Shah before crossing the finish line, they did so with three wickets and 10 balls to spare.
This was a battle between two teams who were looking for their first T20 World Cup win, and Uganda edged out Papua New Guinea in that race.
For his sturdy inning of 33-off-56 in the middle-order, Riazat Ali Shah was named the Player of the Match.
