Omkar Salvi Picked As New RCB Bowling Coach: Omkar Salvi, the head coach of the Mumbai Ranji team, has been signed by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru as their bowling coach ahead of IPL 2025.
Salvi, who is currently coaching Mumbai in the ongoing Ranji Trophy, has had a decent career in domestic cricket, playing for sides like Karnataka and the Railways. While he did not play any franchise cricket himself, he has had experience coaching in it.
The 46-year-old has previously worked with the Kolkata Knight Riders, being the side’s assistant coach at the start of the decade. He was with the franchise when they reached the final in 2021, losing to the Chennai Super Kings.
In 2023, he took the job as the head coach of the historically successful Mumbai Ranji Team, captained by Ajinkya Rahane. And in his very first season, he won the trophy, leading Mumbai to their 42nd Ranji title.
Having been retained by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) for another year, his contract with the team will end in March 2025.
Brother of former India pace bowler Avishkar Salvi, Omkar Salvi played a lot of Ranji and first-class cricket. But his only List A game came in 2005 when he played for Railways against Madhya Pradesh.
Omkar Salvi Picked As New RCB Bowling Coach
Now, Salvi has been appointed by RCB as their bowling coach for the 2025 season. And while he now has the job, no one knows at the moment what that entails, as before the IPL 2025 mega auction, which will take place on November 24-25, no franchise, and especially the Royal Challengers, have their bowling attack in place.
The only bowler the Bengaluru-based franchise has retained in the auction is the uncapped Yash Dayal for Rs. 4 crore. The other players retained are – superstar Virat Kohli for Rs. 21 crore and promising keeper-batter Rajat Patidar for Rs. 11 crore.
Alongside Omkar, Dinesh Karthik has joined the Royal Challengers Bengaluru coaching staff as well as the team’s batting coach. This is newsworthy because Karthik and Salvi have worked together in the past, as the Indian wicketkeeper was first a player and then the captain of the KKR when Omkar Salvi was the assistant coach.
