Ollie Pope On England Playing Approach: Temporary England Cricket Team Test captain Ollie Pope has claimed that their recent win over Sri Lanka in the first of three Test matches proves that they are not a one-dimensional team and that they can approach a match in many different ways.
Being played in the Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester, the first Test saw Sri Lanka win the toss and be bowled out for 236, with captain Dhananjaya de Silva scoring 74. In response, the three Lions scored 358 runs as wicketkeeper Jamie Smith scored his first Test ton.
In the third inning, the Lankan Lions scored 326 runs, with Kusal Mendis scoring a century. With 205 runs required off the last inning with five sessions remaining, the English chased the target down in 57.2 overs with five wickets to spare. The match ended in four days.
Despite finishing the match a day early, England’s fourth-inning chase was uncharacteristically slow. Under their ‘Bazball’ philosophy, this team believes in playing all-out cricket. This means that they would have tried chasing the 205-run target in far fewer overs like it was a limited-overs game.

Following the win, skipper Ollie Pope talked to the BBC about how the win against the Sri Lanka Cricket Team in the first Test showed that England could approach a match in multiple ways and will not always look to play in an ‘all-out’ manner, saying,
“On another day, you might see us try to knock that off in 20 less overs. It shows where we’re coming on as a team overall; we’re not just a one-dimensional team where we want to go out and score quickly. We want to keep reading situations slightly better and try to be as ruthless as we can. If we feel like that is a way to go, it’s not all about trying to score as quickly as we can; it’s about getting the job done.”
Pope also commented on how he learnt a lot from captaining England for the first time, meanwhile also talking about how regular captain Ben Stokes, who is out with a hamstring injury, is still with the squad in the dressing room.
“It was different, more so in the field. There were some good lessons learned for me… I think Stokesy was bored at times. He’d much rather be playing. He was great. Every now and again I’d pick his brain, more than he comes to me. He wanted to give me my own space to do it my own way, but I know there will be conversations with him and [McCullum] while we’re on the pitch about potential plans for different batters, which is great to have when we come off for a break.” said Pope.
While the first England vs Sri Lanka Test ended in a win for the home team, it was not a memorable Test for Ollie Pope, the batter, who was dismissed for six runs in both innings he batted.
